Motorway Police Enforce Eid Travel Safety with Lower Speed Limits and Strict Measures

As the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays approach, the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) have issued an important travel advisory aimed at ensuring the safety of the millions expected to hit the roads. With traffic volumes on motorways and highways anticipated to surge significantly during the festive period, authorities are urging all travelers to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to safety regulations. The advisory highlights a series of precautionary measures designed to manage the increased flow of vehicles and minimize the risk of accidents during this busy travel season.

A spokesperson representing the Central Zone of the NHMP detailed that special arrangements have been put in place to handle the anticipated traffic pressure efficiently. These measures include enhanced patrolling, deployment of additional personnel, and the implementation of stricter traffic control protocols. Motorists are being reminded to follow the newly imposed reduced speed limits, which are tailored to different vehicle categories to promote safer driving conditions across the network.

Specifically, the advisory sets the maximum speed limit for cars and light transport vehicles (LTV) at 100 kilometers per hour on motorways, while public service vehicles (PSV) and heavy transport vehicles (HTV) must not exceed 90 kilometers per hour. On national highways, these limits are further lowered, with cars and LTVs restricted to 80 kilometers per hour and PSV/HTV vehicles capped at 65 kilometers per hour. These adjustments aim to reduce the likelihood of high-speed collisions, which tend to increase during holiday rushes.

In addition to speed regulations, the NHMP has emphasized the importance of maintaining lane discipline, wearing seat belts at all times, and exercising caution behind the wheel. Drivers are encouraged to avoid risky maneuvers and remain patient to prevent accidents. The spokesperson also advised travelers to seek up-to-date travel information before embarking on their journeys by contacting the Motorway Police helpline at 130 or by following official social media channels, which will provide real-time updates on road conditions and traffic management.

Meanwhile, the Central Region has intensified its crackdown on traffic violations and unfair practices under the directives of Inspector General Sultan Chaudhry. Recent enforcement actions have resulted in fines totaling Rs4.8 million imposed on 937 vehicles for overloading offenses. Furthermore, 203 buses were ordered to refund more than Rs700,000 to passengers who were charged excessively. The crackdown also saw the issuance of 15,056 challans for overspeeding violations, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to curbing dangerous driving habits during the holiday period.

Authorities have also issued warnings about potential hazards posed by weather conditions, particularly rainfall, which could make driving on national highways more challenging. Motorists are urged to remain alert and adjust their driving accordingly to avoid mishaps. The NHMP’s overarching message remains clear: public safety is paramount, and cooperation from all road users is essential to ensure a smooth and accident-free Eid travel experience. By following the guidelines and respecting traffic laws, travelers can contribute to a safer journey for themselves and others on the road.
