Pakistan Refutes Afghan Taliban’s False Claims of Airstrike on Kabul Rehab Centre

On Tuesday, Pakistan firmly rejected the Afghan Taliban’s assertion that a Pakistani airstrike had struck a drug rehabilitation centre in Kabul, labeling the claim as entirely false and misleading. The Pakistani government clarified that the recent airstrikes were meticulously aimed at specific military targets and infrastructure supporting terrorist activities, rather than civilian facilities. This statement came in response to Afghan authorities’ allegations that approximately 400 people were killed in the supposed attack on the rehabilitation centre, a claim that quickly gained traction across various media platforms.

In an effort to address the misinformation, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, through its dedicated fact-checking unit, dismissed these accusations as baseless and rooted in manipulated content. The ministry highlighted that the Afghan Taliban had circulated AI-generated video clips and outdated images to fabricate a narrative against Pakistan. This tactic, they explained, was part of a broader propaganda campaign designed to distort the truth and sway public opinion unjustly.

Elaborating further, the ministry pointed out that the image used by the Afghan Taliban spokesperson to substantiate their claim was not recent but dated back to May 2023. This photograph had originally been released by the Afghan Taliban’s own Interior Ministry at that time, which clearly undermines the credibility of the current allegations. The recycling of such old visuals to support fresh accusations was described as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and create confusion about the actual events on the ground.

Moreover, the ministry addressed the specific allegation concerning Omid Hospital, which the Afghan Taliban claimed was hit during the airstrike. Officials clarified that Omid Hospital is situated several kilometres away from Camp Phoenix, the actual location targeted by Pakistan’s strikes. Camp Phoenix is known to be a military installation and an ammunition storage site used by militants. The ministry emphasized the stark structural differences between the hospital—a multi-storied building—and the targeted military facility, further discrediting the Taliban’s narrative.

Adding to the skepticism, Pakistan’s fact-check unit noted that the initial post by the Afghan Taliban making these claims was subsequently deleted. This deletion raised questions about the authenticity and reliability of the content, suggesting that it may not have withstood scrutiny after multiple fact-checks were conducted. The ministry insinuated that the AI-generated clips and manipulated visuals failed to hold up under verification, prompting the Taliban to retract their misleading statements.

In its official statement, Pakistan reiterated that on the night of March 16, it executed precise airstrikes targeting military installations and terrorist support infrastructure located in Kabul and Nangarhar. These sites reportedly housed technical equipment and ammunition depots utilized by both the Afghan Taliban and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to orchestrate attacks against Pakistani civilians. The visible secondary explosions following the strikes were cited as clear evidence of large ammunition caches being destroyed.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar underscored the careful planning behind the operation, emphasizing that efforts were made to avoid civilian casualties and collateral damage. He questioned the logic behind the Afghan Taliban’s claim that a drug rehabilitation centre would be located alongside a lethal ammunition storage facility within a military camp. The ministry condemned attempts to portray these military targets as civilian sites, describing such efforts as deliberate attempts to manipulate public sentiment and obscure the Taliban’s ongoing support for cross-border terrorism.

Concluding the statement, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting firmly rejected the Afghan Taliban’s allegations as false and misleading. The ministry stressed that these claims were designed to distort facts and misguide public opinion, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to conducting precise operations against terrorist elements while safeguarding innocent lives. This episode highlights the ongoing information warfare accompanying the physical conflict in the region, with both sides seeking to influence domestic and international perceptions.
