The Punjab government has declared its intention to take stringent legal action against individuals and media outlets disseminating what it terms as misleading and fabricated information concerning the use of the province’s official aircraft. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb spoke out firmly on Sunday, condemning the spread of falsehoods that have recently surfaced regarding the provincial government’s acquisition and operation of the Gulfstream business jet.
In a detailed statement shared on the social media platform X, Aurangzeb denounced the ongoing campaign of misinformation as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of the Punjab government. She described those involved as “known pathological liars and peddlers of fake news,” emphasizing that such actions are not only irresponsible but also legally punishable. The minister made it clear that the government will no longer tolerate the circulation of baseless allegations aimed at misleading the public and undermining official institutions.
To counter these false narratives, the Punjab administration plans to initiate court proceedings under the recently enacted Defamation Law 2024. Aurangzeb stressed that the government is committed to pursuing the maximum penalties available under this legislation to hold accountable all parties responsible for spreading disinformation. She warned that anyone attempting to malign the government or its officials through fabricated stories should prepare to face the full force of the law.
This controversy erupted following public criticism over Punjab’s purchase of a Gulfstream G500 business jet, reportedly costing approximately Rs10 billion. Opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) accused the provincial government of acquiring the aircraft for the personal use of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. However, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari swiftly refuted these claims, clarifying that the jet is part of a larger initiative known as “Air Punjab.” This program aims to establish a fleet of aircraft through a combination of purchases and leases to enhance the province’s official air transport capabilities.
Further details from aviation insiders revealed that the Gulfstream G500, bearing the American registration number N144S, was procured by the Punjab government and arrived in Lahore on December 28. The aircraft’s journey included stops in Bangor, North America, and Hurghada, Egypt, before landing at Allama Iqbal International Airport. Upon arrival, the jet underwent an extensive interior refurbishment lasting around 40 days at Lahore airport to meet the government’s specifications.
Since completing its refurbishment, the aircraft embarked on its inaugural domestic flight on February 6, traveling from Lahore to Multan. Following this, it has been deployed on multiple official trips to various cities including Quetta, Mianwali, Sialkot, and Rawalpindi. The plane operates under the call sign “PUNJAB2,” symbolizing its role as a key asset in the provincial government’s transportation network.
It is worth noting that the Punjab government’s move to legally challenge the spread of false information reflects a broader effort to safeguard public institutions from reputational damage. By invoking the Defamation Law 2024, the administration aims to set a precedent that misinformation, especially when it targets government operations, will be met with decisive legal consequences. This development highlights the increasing importance of accountability and responsible reporting in Pakistan’s political landscape.
