Intelligence Bureau Assigned to Oversee Government’s National Austerity Measures Implementation

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has entrusted the Intelligence Bureau (IB) with the critical responsibility of overseeing the enforcement of the national austerity plan throughout all government institutions. This directive was formalized through an official notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Monday, highlighting the bureau’s role in conducting a thorough audit and validation process. The IB’s task includes assessing the impact of all fuel conservation efforts and additional austerity measures that have been introduced to address the country’s current economic challenges.

The notification further mandates the Intelligence Bureau to provide weekly updates not only to the Prime Minister but also to the Committee for Monitoring and Implementation of Fuel Conservation and Additional Austerity Measures. This step ensures continuous oversight and accountability in the application of austerity policies across federal and provincial government departments.

This move follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement of a comprehensive austerity and savings strategy aimed at mitigating the financial strain caused by escalating fuel prices. These price hikes have been largely influenced by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. In his national address on March 9, the Prime Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to making difficult but necessary economic and administrative decisions to shield the country from the adverse effects of the global energy crisis.

During his speech, PM Shehbaz outlined several key measures that both federal and provincial governments would adopt to promote austerity and simplicity. These measures include significant cuts in government spending, a reduction of the official working week to four days, and limitations on non-essential travel. Additionally, he announced that federal cabinet members, advisers, and special assistants would voluntarily forgo their salaries for the next two months, while members of parliament would see a 25% reduction in their salaries during the same period. These steps are intended to set an example and encourage energy conservation and fiscal discipline throughout the public sector.

In parallel, the Intelligence Bureau has also been instructed to monitor the implementation of these austerity measures within the secretariats of the National Assembly and Senate. Authorities have made it clear that any government officers found violating the austerity or fuel conservation directives will face immediate disciplinary action, underscoring the seriousness with which these policies are being enforced.

The decision to assign the IB as the watchdog came shortly after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level review meeting focused on the progress of austerity and fuel conservation efforts. During this meeting, the Prime Minister reiterated that ensuring economic stability and providing relief to the public remain the government’s foremost priorities. He stressed that the administration is taking all necessary steps not only to offer short-term relief but also to secure the country’s long-term economic health amid ongoing global uncertainties.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister directed petroleum distribution companies to strictly adhere to government-set prices for petroleum products and maintain full transparency in their operations. He assured participants that consultations are underway to explore additional measures aimed at easing the burden on consumers. Thanks to timely government interventions, an adequate supply of petroleum products is currently available in the country, which is crucial for meeting domestic demand during these challenging times.

During the meeting, officials provided a detailed briefing on the nation’s existing oil reserves, ongoing imports of petroleum products, and the strategies in place to ensure uninterrupted supply and fair pricing. The government continues to closely monitor the sale of fuel at fixed prices to prevent any exploitation or black-market activities.

In an effort to enhance consumer participation and transparency, a new feature has been integrated into the Pak App, allowing citizens to report issues such as fuel shortages or instances where fuel is being sold above the government-mandated prices. This digital tool empowers the public to directly inform authorities, who are then expected to take swift corrective action.

The participants of the review meeting expressed their appreciation for the Prime Minister’s recent decision to hold petroleum prices steady, a move that was announced last Friday and welcomed by many as a relief for consumers. The meeting was attended by key cabinet members including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, reflecting the high level of coordination within the government on this critical issue.
