The Punjab government has taken a groundbreaking step by officially launching its inaugural Artificial Intelligence (AI) roadmap in Lahore, with the ambitious goal of positioning the province as South Asia’s foremost AI hub by the year 2029. This pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s technological landscape, reflecting the provincial administration’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge innovation and digital transformation.
Central to this visionary plan is the establishment of the world’s first AI Delivery Unit within Punjab. This specialized unit will spearhead the implementation and coordination of AI-driven projects across various sectors. The Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, has been appointed as the Chairperson of both the AI Delivery Unit and the Special Project Team, underscoring the high-level political backing and strategic importance attributed to this initiative.
In a recent high-profile meeting, Provincial AI Advisor Ali Dar presented an in-depth briefing on the comprehensive AI roadmap. The plan outlines a multi-faceted approach aimed at harnessing AI technologies to drive economic growth, improve public service delivery, and foster innovation. Officials highlighted that this initiative is expected to generate over 100,000 new employment opportunities for the local workforce within the next three years, a development that could significantly alleviate unemployment and stimulate the province’s economy.
Moreover, the economic implications of this AI strategy are substantial. Projections suggest that the initiative could contribute to an increase in Punjab’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by an estimated 5 to 10 percent. Additionally, it holds the potential to enhance foreign exchange earnings by as much as 10 to 20 billion US dollars, positioning Punjab as a competitive player in the global technology market. These figures reflect the transformative impact AI could have on the province’s economic landscape.
To ensure the initiative’s success and maintain a forward-looking vision, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has also given the green light for the creation of an AI Technical Advisory Board. This board will consist of experts and industry leaders tasked with providing strategic guidance, technical oversight, and policy recommendations to steer the AI roadmap effectively.
Addressing the gathering, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the critical role AI will play in enhancing the efficiency and capacity of government departments. She highlighted that integrating AI technologies into public administration will not only streamline operations but also improve service delivery to citizens across Punjab. Furthermore, she stressed that this initiative is designed to unlock the vast potential of Punjab’s youth by equipping them with modern technological skills, thereby fostering a new generation of innovators and tech-savvy professionals.
As Punjab embarks on this transformative journey, the province is poised to become a beacon of technological advancement in South Asia. The AI roadmap not only reflects a strategic vision for economic and social development but also signals Pakistan’s growing engagement with the global digital economy. With strong leadership and a clear plan, Punjab aims to set a benchmark for AI adoption and innovation in the region by 2029.
