Yamal’s Last-Minute Penalty Secures Barcelona Draw as Atletico Rout Spurs in Champions League

In a thrilling night of Champions League football on Tuesday, Lamine Yamal emerged as the unlikely hero for Barcelona, scoring a dramatic last-minute penalty to secure a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid delivered a crushing 5-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the Metropolitano, compounding the English side’s recent struggles. Bayern Munich also stamped their authority on the competition with a commanding 6-1 victory over Atalanta in Italy, putting themselves firmly on course for the quarter-finals.

The match at St James’ Park seemed destined to end in a narrow victory for Newcastle, who took the lead late in the game through Harvey Barnes. The English winger capitalized on a precise cross from Jacob Murphy in the 86th minute, marking his sixth goal in this season’s Champions League campaign. Newcastle’s fans were already celebrating what looked like a historic win as the club aims to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their history. However, Barcelona’s persistence paid off in the dying moments when Dani Olmo was fouled inside the box by Malick Thiaw, resulting in a penalty deep into injury time. Yamal, who had been relatively quiet throughout the match, stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick in the 96th minute, snatching a vital away goal for the Catalan giants.

Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe, expressed cautious optimism despite the late setback, emphasizing his team’s belief and resilience. He highlighted that the draw still leaves hope for the second leg at Camp Nou next Wednesday, where Newcastle will need to overturn the deficit to advance. The outcome of this tie is expected to set up a quarter-final clash with Atletico Madrid, who dismantled Tottenham in a one-sided encounter.

Atletico Madrid’s demolition of Spurs was marked by clinical finishing and capitalizing on defensive errors, particularly from Tottenham’s young Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. The 22-year-old, making only his third appearance of the season, endured a nightmare evening. His early mistake allowed Marcos Llorente to open the scoring in the sixth minute, setting the tone for a dominant Atletico display. Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead after capitalizing on a slip by Micky van de Ven, and Julian Alvarez added a third following a blunder by Kinsky just 15 minutes into the match.

Kinsky’s struggles continued, leading to his substitution by coach Igor Tudor, who admitted the decision was made to protect the goalkeeper’s confidence and the team’s morale. Despite the change, Atletico continued to press, with Robin Le Normand heading in a fourth goal before halftime. Pedro Porro managed to pull one back for Spurs, but Alvarez’s second goal early in the second half, following a brilliant assist from Griezmann, restored Atletico’s commanding lead. Spurs’ Dominic Solanke scored late to make it 5-2, offering a faint glimmer of hope for the return leg. However, Tottenham’s current form under Tudor remains bleak, with six consecutive defeats across all competitions.

In Istanbul, Liverpool faced a familiar challenge against Galatasaray and suffered a narrow 1-0 loss, mirroring their previous encounter in the Turkish city during the league phase. The only goal came from Mario Lemina, who headed in from close range after a corner was flicked on by Victor Osimhen. Liverpool’s striker Osimhen had a goal disallowed for offside in the second half, denying the visitors a chance to equalize. Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot acknowledged the difficulty of the away fixture and the uphill battle his team faces heading into the second leg at Anfield. The Reds will need a significantly improved performance to overturn the deficit and progress further in the competition.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich demonstrated why they remain one of the favorites to lift the Champions League trophy this season. In a dominant display against Atalanta in Bergamo, Bayern ran out 6-1 winners, with Michael Olise shining brightly. Josip Stanisic opened the scoring early, and Olise doubled the lead with a fine finish before setting up Serge Gnabry for the third goal just before halftime. The German side continued to press after the break, with Nicolas Jackson adding a fourth and Olise curling in a spectacular fifth, marking his 15th goal of the season. Jamal Musiala capped the scoring with a sixth, leaving Atalanta with a mountain to climb despite a late consolation from Mario Pasalic in stoppage time. Bayern’s comprehensive victory has all but secured their place in the quarter-finals, sending a strong message to their Champions League rivals.
