The Sindh government has unveiled a series of significant policy decisions following a high-level cabinet meeting presided over by the Chief Minister. Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon addressed the media to outline the key outcomes of the session, highlighting initiatives aimed at bolstering the agricultural sector and addressing the ongoing fuel crisis impacting the province.
One of the landmark decisions includes the approval of the Benazir Agriculture Card, a new scheme designed to provide financial and technical assistance to farmers throughout Sindh. This initiative is expected to empower the agricultural community by facilitating access to resources and modern farming techniques, thereby enhancing productivity and sustainability in the sector. Notably, the government emphasized gender equality by ensuring that women farmers receive the same rights and opportunities as their male counterparts, marking a progressive step towards inclusivity in rural development.
In addition to agricultural reforms, the cabinet sanctioned a dedicated fund of Rs. 500 million aimed at supporting women laborers across the province. This financial package is intended to uplift working women by offering them improved welfare benefits and economic assistance. Furthermore, the government approved the issuance of worker identification cards, a move designed to streamline the provision of labor rights and social security benefits, thereby formalizing the workforce and enhancing accountability.
Turning to the education sector, authorities announced plans to intensify monitoring of student attendance and enrollment figures in schools and colleges. This measure seeks to address longstanding challenges in the education system by ensuring better record-keeping and encouraging consistent student participation. However, in response to the escalating fuel shortage, the Sindh government has declared an emergency closure of all educational institutions from March 16 until March 31. Despite the shutdown of physical classes, examinations will proceed as scheduled, and students will be encouraged to continue their studies through virtual learning platforms during this period.
To mitigate the fuel crisis further, the government has mandated a 50 percent reduction in fuel consumption by official vehicles over the next two months. Approximately 60 percent of government vehicles will be taken off the road to conserve fuel resources. Additionally, the Chief Minister and provincial ministers have voluntarily decided to forgo their salaries for three months as a gesture of solidarity and austerity. The matter of assembly members’ salaries will be deliberated separately by the provincial legislature.
Complementing these measures, the government has introduced a new work schedule for public offices, designating Fridays as work-from-home days while maintaining Saturdays and Sundays as official holidays. To curb unnecessary expenditure, all foreign official trips by government representatives have been temporarily suspended. These comprehensive steps reflect the Sindh administration’s commitment to managing the current economic challenges while safeguarding public welfare and institutional functionality.
