In response to escalating security concerns linked to significant public events, the United States Embassy in Pakistan has imposed restrictions on the movement of its personnel starting from 12:00 pm on March 10. This decision comes amid heightened risks associated with large-scale gatherings, including religious processions and public demonstrations, which have the potential to disrupt normal activities and pose safety threats.
The embassy issued an official advisory through its social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), emphasizing the dangers that crowded events could present not only to its staff but also to US citizens residing or traveling in Pakistan. It warned that such occasions might result in road closures, severe traffic congestion, and interruptions in mobile phone and internet connectivity, thereby complicating communication and mobility.
Despite these precautionary measures, the embassy assured that it would maintain essential citizen services at its Islamabad location. However, it announced the indefinite suspension of consular operations at its regional offices in Karachi and Lahore, reflecting the severity of the security environment in these cities. This suspension affects a range of consular services, leaving applicants in these regions awaiting further updates.
In addition to operational changes, the embassy strongly advised all US nationals in Pakistan to remain vigilant during this period. It urged them to carry valid identification documents at all times, stay alert to their surroundings, and adhere strictly to guidance issued by local law enforcement agencies. Staying informed through reliable local news sources was highlighted as a critical step for personal safety.
Furthermore, the embassy announced the cancellation of all visa appointments scheduled between March 9 and March 13. Both immigrant and non-immigrant visa applicants will receive notifications regarding rescheduled appointments via email. Nevertheless, it confirmed that routine and emergency consular services for US citizens, such as passport renewals and urgent assistance, would continue to operate without interruption during this challenging time.
This move by the US Embassy reflects a broader trend of heightened security vigilance in Pakistan, where public gatherings often attract large crowds and can sometimes escalate into volatile situations. The embassy’s proactive steps aim to safeguard its personnel and the American community while navigating the complex security landscape in the country.
