The Sindh government has unveiled a new initiative aimed at empowering women by distributing free pink electric scooters on March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day. This progressive move reflects the provincial administration’s commitment to enhancing women’s mobility while promoting environmentally sustainable transportation options. The announcement was made by the Senior Provincial Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, who highlighted the program’s focus on safety, convenience, and eco-friendliness.
In his statement, Minister Memon emphasized that the initiative is designed to provide women with a reliable and secure mode of transport that also contributes to reducing carbon emissions. The electric scooters, specially chosen for their modern design and energy efficiency, will be distributed to selected women through a transparent and fair balloting process. To complement the distribution, the government will organize formal driving lessons and road safety awareness sessions, ensuring that recipients are well-prepared to navigate urban traffic conditions confidently and responsibly.
This program, dubbed the “Pink Electric Scooter Program,” is part of a broader strategy by the Sindh government to uplift the socio-economic status of women by facilitating easier access to transportation. Reliable mobility is seen as a crucial factor in enabling women to participate more actively in the workforce and public life. The provincial leadership has reiterated its dedication to launching similar initiatives in the future, aimed at improving the quality of life for all citizens, with a particular focus on women’s empowerment.
It is worth noting that this initiative builds on earlier efforts by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in Sindh. Last September, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari personally distributed free pink electric scooters to working women in Karachi during a well-attended ceremony. The event was graced by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Information Minister Sharjeel Memon, and other prominent officials. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari praised the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting women, especially those engaged in the workforce, and highlighted Sindh’s pioneering role as the first province in Pakistan to introduce electric buses as part of its sustainable transport agenda.
To ensure fairness and transparency in the distribution process, the government has established a committee comprising representatives from the Excise, Transport, and Finance departments, along with members of the media. The electric scooters will be allocated through a public balloting system conducted openly in the presence of print and electronic media personnel. This approach aims to eliminate any doubts regarding the selection process and maintain public trust.
Women interested in applying for the electric scooter program can do so by visiting the Sindh Mass Transit Authority’s official website. Applicants need to navigate to the “Projects” section and select the “EV Scooty Ballot Form – Application Form.” After completing the form and attaching the necessary documents, they can submit their applications online. This streamlined digital process is intended to make participation accessible and convenient for women across the province.
