In response to escalating security concerns and recent terror-related incidents in the region, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has issued a directive to significantly strengthen security arrangements throughout the province. This move comes as part of a broader effort to safeguard public safety and maintain law and order amid a challenging national security environment.
Punjab’s Inspector General of Police, Abdul Kareem, convened a high-level meeting with senior law enforcement officials to evaluate current security protocols and devise comprehensive strategies aimed at countering potential threats. The meeting underscored the urgency of reinforcing protective measures, especially in light of recent terrorist activities traced back to neighboring countries, which have heightened concerns across Punjab.
Among the key priorities highlighted was the enhanced protection of vulnerable groups, including Chinese nationals, Sikh pilgrims, and foreign tourists who frequently visit the province’s religious and cultural landmarks. Security forces have been instructed to intensify vigilance at mosques, imambargahs, shrines, and other sensitive religious sites, as well as in bustling marketplaces where large crowds gather daily.
Border checkpoints, particularly those at inter-provincial entry and exit points, have been placed on heightened alert. Security personnel stationed at these critical junctures are tasked with rigorous monitoring of vehicles, rickshaws, and cargo to detect any suspicious activity. The deployment of additional lady police officers in bazaars and markets aims to ensure the safety of women, reflecting a focused approach to community security.
Furthermore, the Inspector General emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among various law enforcement and intelligence agencies, including the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch, and district officials. These agencies are working closely to implement strict security protocols and conduct intelligence-driven search and sweep operations across the province. Verification processes for travelers and hotel guests arriving from other cities have also been tightened to prevent any security breaches.
The meeting saw participation from a wide range of senior officials, including Additional IG Operations, Additional IG Special Branch, DIG Traffic, AIG Operations, and AIG Development. Key figures such as the Additional IG CTD, CCPO Lahore, Additional IG South Punjab, Additional IG CCD, Regional Police Officers (RPOs), City Police Officers (CPOs), and District Police Officers (DPOs) joined via video conference, ensuring a unified and comprehensive approach to the evolving security landscape.
In light of recent drone-related terrorist activities, strict enforcement of government-imposed restrictions under Section 144 has been mandated. Supervisory officers are required to regularly update security personnel on the current threat levels and ensure that all precautionary measures are diligently followed. This proactive stance aims to deter any attempts to destabilize peace and protect the citizens of Punjab from emerging threats.
