The Punjab government has embarked on an ambitious initiative to revolutionize healthcare infrastructure in Lahore by planning the city’s first-ever Nawaz Sharif Medical District. This pioneering project aims to build a comprehensive medical hub inspired by the successful model of the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Care Hospital, which has set new standards in specialized healthcare services.
Spanning over 1,500 kanals of prime land, the proposed medical district is designed to integrate state-of-the-art hospitals with modern urban planning elements. The initial planning phase has already seen the completion of the Project Concept-1 (PC-1) document and detailed 3D architectural designs, laying a strong foundation for the district’s development. This marks a significant milestone in Punjab’s efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility and quality for its growing population.
One of the standout features of this medical district is the inclusion of a helipad occupying 22.87 kanals, which will facilitate rapid emergency medical transport and improve connectivity for critical patients. Additionally, a dedicated gas station covering 32.38 kanals will support the logistical needs of the district, ensuring uninterrupted services for ambulances and other vehicles operating within the area.
In a progressive move towards environmental sustainability, the district will also host a biodiversity park, a first-of-its-kind green space within a medical complex in Punjab. This park is expected to provide a serene environment for patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals, promoting wellness through nature. Complementing this green initiative are mixed-use commercial zones, with two designated areas — Commercial One and Commercial Two — allocated 28.89 and 28.69 kanals respectively. These zones will accommodate shops, cafes, and other amenities, creating a vibrant community atmosphere within the district.
The district’s infrastructure plan includes a wide Civic Avenue that will connect various hospitals and healthcare facilities, facilitating smooth transit and easy navigation. Another major thoroughfare, Sunset Avenue, will span 250 feet in width, designed to handle significant traffic flow while maintaining aesthetic appeal. For pedestrian safety and convenience, 53.99 kanals have been reserved for crosswalks, pedestrian bridges, and the development of Canal Vista, ensuring walkability and accessibility throughout the district.
Strategically linked to the Lahore Ring Road, the Nawaz Sharif Medical District will benefit from direct and efficient access routes, making it easier for patients, visitors, and healthcare workers to reach the facilities without facing typical urban congestion. This connectivity is expected to enhance the overall patient experience and streamline emergency response times.
The first major healthcare facility to be constructed within this district is the Institute of Ophthalmology, with an estimated investment of PKR 1.78 billion. Construction work for this specialized eye care center is slated to commence within the current financial year, signaling the start of a broader development plan that will gradually transform the district into a comprehensive medical and wellness destination.
Overall, the Nawaz Sharif Medical District represents a forward-thinking approach by the Punjab government to integrate healthcare, commerce, and green urban design. This project not only promises to elevate Lahore’s medical infrastructure but also aims to set a benchmark for future healthcare developments across Pakistan.
