ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has strongly condemned the Punjab government’s reported purchase of a luxury Gulfstream business jet valued between $38 million and $42 million, approximately Rs11 billion. PTI’s Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram voiced sharp criticism, asserting that this extravagant acquisition appears to be intended solely for the personal use of the Punjab Chief Minister. This revelation has sparked widespread outrage, especially as the country grapples with severe economic challenges.
Sheikh Waqas Akram highlighted the stark contradiction between the government’s public stance on austerity and its lavish spending on high-end assets. At a time when Pakistan is enduring record-high unemployment rates, soaring inflation, and a fragile economy teetering on the edge, such an opulent purchase seems both insensitive and irresponsible. The PTI leader pointed out that while the government preaches financial restraint, it is simultaneously indulging in excessive expenditures that are out of touch with the everyday struggles faced by millions of Pakistanis.
He further questioned the rationale behind allocating such a massive sum for a VIP jet when nearly 45 percent of the population lives below the poverty line, struggling to afford even basic necessities. The country’s economy remains heavily dependent on foreign loans and mounting debt, making this kind of spending appear reckless and disconnected from ground realities. Sheikh Waqas warned that this kind of fiscal irresponsibility not only undermines public trust but also highlights the government’s disregard for the hardships endured by ordinary citizens.
In addition to condemning the jet purchase, the PTI spokesperson reiterated the party’s firm stance that the misuse of public funds for personal luxury will not be tolerated. He emphasized that those responsible for such decisions must be held fully accountable to the people. This incident, he argued, reflects a broader pattern of governance that prioritizes personal indulgence over public welfare, further alienating the government from the masses it is supposed to serve.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Waqas Akram also expressed deep concern over the ongoing public anxiety regarding the health condition of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He demanded that the government immediately grant unrestricted access to Imran Khan’s personal doctors, allowing them to carry out all necessary medical examinations without delay. The PTI official stressed that the issue transcends politics and touches upon national trust, human rights, and the government’s accountability towards its citizens.
He underscored that any ambiguity or lack of transparency about the health of a leader who commands the support of millions across Pakistan and beyond is unacceptable. The silence and opacity from the authorities have only fueled speculation and heightened public unease. Sheikh Waqas insisted that if the government has nothing to hide, it should promptly facilitate full disclosure of Imran Khan’s medical status.
Furthermore, he demanded that the former prime minister be allowed to undergo any required diagnostic tests, including blood work and scans, at a hospital or diagnostic center of his choice. The government, he stated, bears the responsibility to provide clear, verified, and unambiguous information to the nation regarding his health. Noting that precious time has already been lost amid growing concerns, Sheikh Waqas warned that any further delay in granting access or releasing information would be unacceptable to the party and the public alike.
